Helen Marie Ehler

Helen Marie Ehler has gone to heaven, having resided at Schulenburg Regency Nursing Center for several years. She died on Sunday, Dec. 23, 2018, at 1 p.m. at the age of 98 years, 4 months, after having Alzheimer’s for 12 years. 

Born on Aug. 20, 1920, she was the eldest of six children and always a very hard worker. She was a waitress from early on at Frank’s in Schulenburg. She also worked at the Adamcik’s Café for many years.

Helen married Walter Joe Haas in the ‘40s; after his passing, many years later, she married Alfred Ehler. Helen worked with him at the Freyburg Store. She baked cookies and bread, and canned fruits and vegetables for sale at the store. She pumped gas and did anything which needed doing. When Alfred went to his baptismal promise, Helen moved to Schulenburg and lived there for several years. She then lived for two years with her daughter Dorothy and daughter Joyce also lived with them for four months when she was ill with terminal cancer. After Joyce’s passing, Helen came to live at the Regency Nursing Center in Schulenburg as she was beginning to struggle with Alzheimer’s. She enjoyed being at Regency as many of her friends and acquaintances resided there too. She always had a smile for family and visitors. After having Alzheimer’s for quite a few years, she is now in a better place. She will be missed by many friends and family members. 

Helen is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and John Rigg of Plano; one sister, Vivian (Heiman) Simer of Austin; sisters-in-law, Lunell Heiman of Helotes, Mabel Mazok and son Mike of Houston, Elsie Farek of Schulenburg, and Don and Marilyn Harless of Hutchison, Kan.; brother-in-law, E.J. Haas and wife Joyce of Houston; sons-in-law, Olin and Leehman Ehler of Houston; several grandchildren, from both sides of the family, and great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her first husband, Walter Haas; second husband, Alfred Ehler; daughter, Joyce Wagner; and Dan Heiman.  

The funeral was held on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Swiss Alp, followed by interment in the St. Rose Catholic Cemetery in Schulenburg. Officiating were Brad Otto, Lemae Higgs and Wlater Hildebrandt. Pallbearers were Terry Ehler, Thomas Schneider, Eric Wagner and Robert Simer.
