Schulenburg High class of ‘57 enjoys get-together

The Schulenburg High class of 1957 met to celebrate its 55-year reunion on Sept 21 and 22.

On Friday evening, the group held a pre-homecoming game happy hour at the High Hill Store with pizza provided by Paddy’s Texas Kitchen of Schulenburg.

The class then attended the homecoming football game between the Shorthorns and Flatonia Bulldogs.

On Saturday, the group gathered at Robert’s Steakhouse in Flatonia from 2 to 7 p.m. The social gathering was capped off with a short business meeting and dinner.

During the meeting, special guests (faculty) were welcomed: James and wife Dorothy Ann Rothermel of Brenham and Ben and wife Rene Sustr of Schulenburg.

Notes were read from classmates who were unable to attend: Winfred “Win” Hollas of Rosenberg, Jerry Kahanek of Pearland, Bernard “Bernie” Rosenbach of Peachtree, Ga. and Caroline “Kelly” (Schmidt) Wyckoff of Houston. Robert Knapik, class sponsor, and wife Jane of Marble Falls were unable to attend.

A special display held pictures of the seven deceased classmates: Dean Cook, JoNell Haba, Irene Kobza Jordy, Robert Pratka, Donald Schramek, Ivan Schroeder and Gerald Walla. A special moment was given to those who died since the last reunion: classmates Robert Pratka and Ivan Schroeder along with faculty Callie (Schaefer) Hamon and Pete Owens.

The class agreed to meet again in 2017.
